Japan's Planex Communications recently released a new USB modem, the PL-US56K2(A), designed to let users re-experience the nostalgia of dial-up internet. The modem is compatible with the 56K ITU-T standard and the V.90 and V.92 protocols, and connects easily to modern computers via USB to provide network access over an analog phone line.

In today's era of high-speed 5G and gigabit broadband, dial-up seems like history. However, this modem lets people relive that unique time online. For users who need to connect legacy equipment or send faxes, this nostalgic product may become essential.

The PL-US56K2(A) is priced at about US$40 (approx. HK$311). It connects to the network via an analog phone line and supports data transfer and fax functions. Although its download speed is only 56 Kbps and upload up to 33.6 Kbps—insufficient for HD video—it is adequate for basic email and fax operations.

In the 1990s, dial-up modems were the primary means of internet access, with speeds rising from 14.4 Kbps to 33.6 Kbps, and the 56K modems introduced in 1998 raising theoretical maximums to 56 Kbps. With the spread of broadband, dial-up was gradually phased out, but the release of this new product allows nostalgic users to revisit that experience.

The PL-US56K2(A) is not only a nostalgic symbol but also an ideal solution for connecting legacy systems, offering users a range of convenient options.

The PL-US56K2(A) connects via USB with no additional driver installation required, making it suitable for users without network access or a CD/DVD drive.

This modem supports the 56K ITU-T standard (protocols V.90 and V.92), with a maximum downstream rate of 56 Kbps and upstream up to 33.6 Kbps (theoretical). While it cannot support HD video, it is sufficient for basic email and fax transmission needs.

The PL-US56K2(A) measures 25(W)×18(H)×75(D) mm and weighs about 28 g. Its compact design is easy to carry and does not take up much space.

The product supports Windows 11 and Windows 10 (32-bit/64-bit). Users simply connect it and the standard driver installs automatically, making operation straightforward.

If you need to send faxes, you must purchase Class 1–compatible fax software separately.
