Many people have used Word without really understanding its features. One setting I think most of us never pay attention to is the paragraph "Widow/Orphan control". This setting is on by default in Word, but you might find that whether it's checked or not seems to have no effect on your document. So what does it actually do?
It prevents the last line of a paragraph from appearing alone at the top of a page (an orphan line).Like the image below (circled in red):
This feature prevents that by moving the line before the paragraph's final line down to the next page with the final line, so the following page won't look so empty.
