Reverse lookup — searching right-to-left. VLOOKUP can't do this; what methods can accomplish it?

✅Formula explanation The MATCH function finds the row where 'Banana' is located — the row number is 3, used as INDEX's second argument, returning the value in Column A row 3.
✅Formula 
=LOOKUP(1,0/(B:B=E5),A:A)
✅Formula explanation The key is understanding LOOKUP's second argument. First, B:B=E5 tests whether the range contains a value equal to 'Banana' — it returns True if so, otherwise False. Then dividing 0 by those booleans (0/False and 0/True): 0/False yields an error, 0/True returns 0, which is used to locate that 0's position. Because of this behavior, if the lookup value (first argument) is greater than any value in the second argument, LOOKUP matches the last numeric value in the second argument; errors are ignored. Finally, it returns the value from the third argument corresponding to that position.

=VLOOKUP(E8,IF({1,0},B:B,A:A),2,FALSE)
✅Formula explanation Because VLOOKUP can only search the first column (i.e., the lookup value must be in the lookup_range's first column), you can't use VLOOKUP directly. Here we use IF({1,0},B:B,A:A) to swap columns B and A.
