Insert a QR Code Linked to Cell Contents in Excel

In today’s digital era, QR codes are increasingly used as a convenient way to deliver information. Whether on product packaging or as additional data on electronic invoices, QR codes provide quick access to related content. However, many users rely on online generators to create QR codes; if you want a QR code to be linked to a specific cell in an Excel worksheet, a more specific approach is required.

Why use QR codes in Excel?

For example, if you need to generate an electronic invoice in Excel and print a QR code on each invoice that links to that invoice’s web view, each QR code must be unique. You can insert QR codes in Excel that are linked to cell contents for easier management and updates by following the steps below.

Steps

1. Enable the Developer tab:

First, enable the Developer tab in Excel. Do this by clicking File, selecting Options, and then checking Developer under Customize Ribbon.

2. Insert the QR code control:

  • In Excel, switch to the 'Developer' tab, then choose 'Insert'.
  • From the available controls, select 'More Controls' and find 'Microsoft BarCode Control 16.0'.

3. Add the QR code:

  • Right-click the newly inserted QR code, select 'Microsoft BarCode Control 16.0 Object', then choose 'Properties'.
  • Click once on a blank area of the worksheet to insert the QR code control.

Set the QR code style:

In the Style options, select '11-QR Code' as the QR code format.

5. Link a cell:

In the 'LinkedCell' box, enter the desired cell address (for example B2) so the QR code displays the content of that cell.

5. Enter content:

  • Enter in B2 (or another chosen cell) the content you want the QR code to show, such as a hyperlink or other text.

6. Finish setup:

  • You have now created a QR code linked to cell content. Whenever you change the content in B2, the QR code will update automatically.
