A Guide to the 3 Most Basic Text Functions


The three basic text functions are LEFT, RIGHT, and MID

LEFT: Returns the leftmost characters of a text value\r\n\r\nRIGHT: Returns the rightmost characters of a text value\r\n\r\nMID: Returns a specific number of characters from a text string, starting at a specified position
For example:
  • LEFT: =LEFT(A1,6) extracts 6 characters from the left of A1.
  • RIGHT: =RIGHT(A1,6) extracts 6 characters from the right of A1.
  • MID: =MID(A1,6,2) extracts 2 characters from A1 starting at the 6th character.
  • Extract A12345: =LEFT(B3,6)
  • Extract Limited: =RIGHT(B3,7)
  • Extract DEF: =MID(B3,10,3)
